1 — The Big One
The rally comes to town twice — Lagos on Friday night, Portimão on Saturday afternoon
The Rallye Casinos do Algarve runs out of Lagoa — shakedown in Silves, official start at 15:35 on Friday — and for once the best bits happen on streets you know. Friday night it’s the Lagos City Stage by the Paços do Concelho, with an autograph session: the câmara has cars on show from 18:00 and the stage at 20:00. Check times before you go — be kerbside by 20:00. Saturday it’s Portimão’s turn: the City Stage starts at 16:30 around the Rotunda Salgueiro Maia, and the prize-giving is at 19:00 on Avenida Tomás Cabreira, in front of the Hotel Algarve Casino. Free to watch; expect closures, so park far out and walk in.
2 — The One Nobody’s Told You About
A Lagos painter turns 60 and throws the town a thank-you show
Timo Dillner has lived and worked in Lagos since 1998, and this autumn he marks 60 years of age and four decades of painting. Instead of a sprawling retrospective, the Centro Cultural is hanging “O Cruzeiro”: work from 2018 to 2026, framed explicitly as a homage to the town that shaped his career. The themes are not polite — our dependence on technology, war, violence, greed, cancel culture, the pandemic, doubt, time passing. The opening is Friday at 17:00, free. Go to that rather than a random Tuesday: a local painter’s vernissage is where you meet the town’s art crowd, and the artist. After that it runs Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00–18:00, until 30 December.
3 — Not An Event
Save the beach for Thursday: clear sky, 27°C and the warmest sea of the week
Don’t spend your beach energy on the weekend. Friday to Sunday sit under cloud at 24–27°C, with Saturday one of the two breeziest days (21 km/h max wind). Monday and Tuesday carry a small drizzle risk — 10% then 26%, under a millimetre. Then it clears: Thursday Oct 8 is sunny and 27°C, with the wind down to 13 km/h. Meanwhile the sea keeps warming — 19.2°C on Saturday, 20.5°C by Wednesday, 20.8°C on Thursday — and the swell drops from 1.4 m on Friday to about half a metre by Monday, staying under a metre after that. So: rally and galleries at the weekend, Thursday for Meia Praia, and Friday Oct 9 (26°C, clear) as your back-up.

This is a week of two halves. The weekend belongs to Portimão and Lagos: rally cars through both towns, the InDireita Street Fest filling Rua Direita on Sunday, the afpop expo at the Arena for anyone still wrestling with paperwork, and wine tasting in Alvor’s old fish market. Then it goes grey and slightly damp for a couple of days — ideal for Timo Dillner’s new show at the Centro Cultural or the ColeTa’26 play at Lagoa’s auditório — before Thursday turns into the best beach day of the window. Silves closes the week loud and free with SUM by the river. What’s missing: there’s still no cinema grid anywhere I trust. Go to the vernissage on Friday.

TAHITI! — Bernstein’s suburban opera, plus a Portuguese premiere
A double bill of Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti (1952) and the national premiere of Alannah Marie Halay’s Pacific Pleasures: a young couple in a nice suburb find that getting everything didn’t make them happy. Seven Hanging Valleys — Thursday’s cliff walk
Along the cliffs past Benagil and Praia do Carvalho, where you reach the sand through a tunnel cut in the limestone. Around 6 km one way (about 3 h). It’s linear, so leave a car at each end or plan the walk back. Save it for Thursday when the wind drops; not on breezy Saturday.
Ao Sabor da Maré — flat boardwalk loop for the grey days
Boardwalk and packed-earth loop between the ria and the sea, with bikes allowed and rental on site. Roughly 5–6 km and 1–2 hours, depending on how much of it you do, and dead flat — a good one for Sunday under cloud.
Caldas to Picota — the serra loop for a cool Monday or Tuesday
A proper day out through the green, shady serra, past the Mirante da Mata, with an optional detour to the Picota lookout. Expect plenty of climbing; walkers who have done it warn of rock scrambling on the summit detour.
